Senior Information

Dear Senior Parents/Guardians:
Congratulations! Your child’s senior year is finally upon us! I am writing to let you know about some of the changes that have taken place this year and who you can contact if you have any questions about the college application process, graduation requirements, or anything pertinent to your child's senior year. I sent out an informational letter early in August about the changes that will be taking place this year, and we wanted to make sure you know who to contact if you have any issues that involve meeting with guidance. I will be assisting with scheduling, transcripts, and any grade-related issues related to PowerSchool. Mr. Dotski will be working with seniors on the college application process, and Mrs. Clark will be meeting with students for counseling purposes. Mrs. Coleman will still be our GEAR UP liaison.

As parents, you are an essential component in working with the school through this often challenging process. Mr. Dotski is the key point person to reach out to if you have any questions about the college application process, deadlines or financial aid. He can be reached at jodots@lisbon.k12.nh.us if you need to contact him. He will be reaching out to you soon to let you know about upcoming events and any important deadlines. If your child needs to have a transcript sent to a school, they should send me the request at pafran@lisbon.k12.nh.us. This request is often sent through the Common Application or SENDedu websites when your child applies to a college.

Application deadlines vary from school to school. We encourage students to submit applications as early as possible. It is generally a good idea to have your applications completed 2-4 weeks before the deadline. One of the key pieces to this process is knowing all deadlines. If your child is applying to a 2 or 4 year college it is likely that they will need 2 to 3 letters of recommendation. Between Mr. Dotski and myself, we will be writing the school/counselor letter that highlights your child’s high school accomplishments. I have attached a “Parent Brag Sheet” to help assist us in writing these letters for your child. The parent brag sheet is a way for you to highlight your child's strengths so that the school can include an honest, in-depth, and strong recommendation letter with your child’s college applications. Please answer the questions on the Parent Brag Sheet and email your responses to one of us or drop the sheet off in the office by September 30th. We also have hard copies available in the office if you would like to pick one up. If your child is asking a teacher for a letter of recommendation, please have them ask in advance and give the teachers ample time to write the letter.

There are many college application websites out there, however, there are two extremely helpful sites that provide extensive information you might find valuable. I encourage you to visit https://www.nhheaf.org/ for more guidance on the college application process. This site is designed for New Hampshire students, parents and schools. They offer many free services and will be hosting our upcoming Financial Aid night. For financial aid information, please visit https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. I attached an informational sheet about the FAFSA below so that you know what the real site is because this is free, and there are many companies out there that charge money. You do not have to pay to fill out this form.

Below please find some information from Mr. Dotski about upcoming events:

The Simple Dollar

The Simple Dollar is a syndicated website dedicated to personal finance topics. The Simple Dollar has been featured and has been given high praise on reputable sources such as CNN, MSN, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes for its money saving ideas and valuable information.
One resource we prepared to help high school students entering college save money on tuition is The College Scholarship Guide. Not only does this resource provide actionable tips on applying for scholarships, but it also helps students realize how accessible and truly valuable getting a scholarship can be. Higher education costs are at an all-time high, and landing into the right scholarship could be the difference between graduating debt-free or paying off loans for years and years. The great news is that anyone can just be eligible for some type of scholarship. They just need to know where to look and be organized enough to apply. This guide takes them through the steps.
